Zimbabwe Diamond Workers Union secretary general recognised for advocacy
JUSTICE Chinhema, secretary general of the Zimbabwe Diamond Allied Minerals Workers Union, has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 Labour Champions Award in the Outstanding Trade Union Leadership category, with the award ceremony set for December 18 at Manna Resort in Harare.
Chinhema, a tireless advocate for miners’ rights, was chosen by the Blackbelt Standards, Awards, and Ethics Committee for his dedication to improving the working conditions and welfare of Zimbabwe’s mining communities. His leadership has earned recognition not only from his peers but also from organisations across the region.
A statement confirming his nomination reads: “We have selected you, Justice Chinhema, as a finalist for the 2024 Labour Champions Award in the Outstanding Trade Union Leadership category.”
The Awards Dinner will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Manna Resort.
The Blackbelt Awards of Mastery, hosted by the Blackbelt Human Capital Institute (BHCI), aim to highlight exceptional professionals in labour administration, human resources, business coaching, and mentorship. BHCI, a Pan-African institute, promotes specialist certifications in human capital management and business coaching. According to BHCI, specialists address complex issues and help organisations and individuals achieve lasting, positive change.
Chinhema’s nomination underscores the critical role trade union leaders play in shaping fair labour policies and advocating for workers’ rights in challenging sectors like mining. His work has not only improved the living standards of miners but also advanced broader conversations about fair wages, health and safety standards, and union rights in Zimbabwe.
