ZIMBABWE’S steel industry is set to transform as Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO), Africa’s largest steel manufacturer, brings local production to scale with its Manhize Project, which began producing cast iron in June and aims to eliminate the country’s $1 billion annual reliance on imported steel.

Dinson, a subsidiary of China’s Tsingshan Holding Group, plans to produce enough steel to meet local demand and boost industrialisation. “Our commitment to Zimbabwe goes beyond production; we’re laying a foundation for economic independence,” said Wilfred Motsi, project manager at DISCO, at the Mine Entra event in Bulawayo. “Dinson will make high-quality steel available in Zimbabwe, eliminating the need for costly imports.”

Green energy powers production

In a bid to ensure sustainable production, Dinson is integrating green energy sources at its Manhize plant. The company has nearly completed a 20 MW power plant using waste gas from its blast furnace, expected to be operational within a month. A 100 MW wind farm and a solar plant are also in development stages. “Green steel is our target, and we’re taking significant steps to power Manhize with renewable energy,” Motsi added.

Building a city around steel

Dinson envisions Manhize evolving into a thriving hub for Zimbabwe’s steel industry and a new modern city. “Manhize will be a city of the future, a home for industries and residents,” Motsi explained. He invited investors to explore the opportunities Dinson’s development brings, highlighting incentives such as ample, trained local labour and ready infrastructure.

“We’re not just building a plant; we’re building a community with a value-addition park and zones ready for industries,” Motsi noted. He extended an open invitation to investors: “The town is open, and we’re ready for partnerships that will shape Manhize into a vibrant economic centre.”

Local content for national growth

Dinson’s operations emphasise Zimbabwean resources and talent, with a focus on local content development. The project has already trained local staff and promises to boost employment opportunities. “Dinson believes in Zimbabwe, and we are here to stay,” said Motsi, optimistic about the economic impact of local production on industrial growth.

As Dinson’s Manhize Project approaches full operational capacity, Zimbabwe is poised for a steel-led economic shift that promises job creation, investor interest, and a reduction in import
