The mining industry is at a pivotal moment. As the world shifts towards technology and sustainability, this sector must evolve to meet a future where innovation not only boosts profits but also enhances safety, environmental stewardship, and long-term efficiency. Central to this change is one of mining’s oldest and most vital practices: blasting. What was once a simple method of breaking rock is now transforming into a complex, technology-driven process that has the potential to change mining as we know it.

During the Association of Mine Managers Zimbabwe (AMMZ) annual general meeting in Bulawayo from 21–24 November 2024, Moshen Jena, Regional Manager of AECI Mining Explosives, shared a compelling vision for this transformation. His presentation, titled “Beyond Traditional Blasting: Emerging Trends and Technology,” urged mine managers to adopt new systems and practices that integrate advanced technology, sustainability, and efficiency. The conference, themed “Smart Mining: Integrating Technology for Enhanced Safety, Productivity, and Sustainability,” served as the perfect backdrop for Jena’s message: adapt now, or face the consequences of being left behind.

The new rules of mining

Mining has always required precision and resourcefulness, but Jena described its current transformation in stark terms. He quoted Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum, reminding attendees: “In the new world, it is not the big fish that eats the small fish, but the fast fish that eats the slow fish.” This change highlights a crucial reality for the mining sector: speed, agility, and innovation are now the main drivers of success.

“Mining is not just an extractive activity,” Jena stated. “It is a business. And as a business, it must adapt to the constantly changing dynamics of the market, technology, and the environment to stay competitive, profitable, and sustainable.”

For blasting, this means adopting advancements that not only enhance efficiency but also align with the industry’s increasing commitment to sustainability. Jena identified four key areas of transformation: sustainable explosives, modern initiation systems, automated delivery systems, and digital technology.

Cutting-edge technologies transforming blasting

The future of blasting is focused on precision and automation. Jena discussed the latest advancements in initiation systems, such as electronic detonation, wireless communication, and digital solutions that do away with traditional downlines. One of the most notable innovations is the Cyberdet™ wireless detonator, which utilises advanced communication systems to function effectively through rock layers. This technology minimises risk by automating the charging process and keeping workers safe, while also enhancing blast accuracy and consistency.

Sustainability is also influencing changes in blasting materials. Bulk emulsion explosives, eco-friendly propellants, and even non-explosive alternatives are being developed to lessen environmental impact without compromising performance. Jena noted that the industry’s move toward sustainable solutions is not merely a reaction to external pressures but an acknowledgment of the long-term benefits of environmentally responsible practices.

Automated delivery systems are transforming how explosives are used. With the incorporation of robotics, autonomous loading, and precision charging technologies, modern blasting is now more consistent and safer than ever. These systems promote optimal resource utilisation, reduce waste, and ensure a closer alignment between blast design and execution.

The digital shift

One of the most significant changes in modern blasting is the integration of digital technology. Jena highlighted the role of predictive blast design software, real-time monitoring, and advanced data analytics in helping mines make informed, data-driven decisions.

Additionally, virtual reality training is becoming an essential tool, allowing miners to engage in immersive, risk-free training that equips them for actual working conditions. “Digital transformation in blasting goes beyond just technology; it involves rethinking our approach to every part of the process,” Jena explained. These advancements not only enhance safety and efficiency but also deliver valuable insights that streamline operations from planning through to execution.

Leadership in a changing environment

Jena’s presentation went beyond merely showcasing technical advancements; it served as a rallying cry for mine managers. He encouraged industry leaders to evaluate their current operations, pinpoint areas for improvement, and create a clear plan for adopting new technologies.

“Digital transformation isn’t just about technology; it’s fundamentally about people,” he underscored. “The success of any innovation hinges on the mine manager and their team.”

He also commended AECI Mining Explosives for its pivotal role in advancing the industry. With a legacy of over 120 years of innovation, the company has positioned itself as a reliable partner for mines looking for customized solutions to contemporary challenges.

The time to adapt is now

As Jena pointed out, the mining industry is at a crucial juncture. Blasting, which was once considered a basic technique, has evolved into a sophisticated operation that can transform the entire sector. Innovations in initiation systems, eco-friendly explosives, automated delivery methods, and digital technologies provide mines with exceptional opportunities to enhance safety, cut costs, and increase productivity.

However, the real challenge is how swiftly the industry can adapt. The days of conventional mining methods are behind us. In this new era, the companies that will succeed are those that welcome innovation and act with speed and flexibility.

The future of mining is in the hands of the agile, and the agile are already taking the lead.
