Heads Up: The Hidden Dangers of Drilling and Blasting

UNDERGROUND drilling and blasting rank among the highest-risk operations in mining, demanding unwavering safety measures to prevent catastrophic incidents.

The risks involved in underground drilling and blasting are daunting. Kundai Chidamba, Managing Director of T&A Drilling and Blasting, emphasises the importance of stringent safety protocols in these operations.

“Drilling is a technique that creates holes in rock, where explosive material is packed and detonated. This process induces cracks in the surrounding rock, facilitating further mining activities,” he explains.

The stakes are high; mishaps can escalate rapidly, transforming small problems into life-threatening situations. Fire, explosions, and falls are just a few of the dangers lurking in these high-pressure environments.

Before drilling begins, the proposed site undergoes a thorough inspection. Decisions regarding hole size, required drills, and other essential factors hinge on initial site survey findings. This survey examines the nature of the rock, soil, and minerals, shaping the course of subsequent drilling processes.

Chidamba insists that strict adherence to occupational health and safety protocols is non-negotiable. “Every drilling site must have a robust response plan tailored to its specific layout and location,” he states.

Key Safety Measures for Drilling Operations

To mitigate risks, the following precautions are vital:

  1. Fall Protection: Workers must be vigilant about their surroundings. Uneven terrain and slippery areas pose significant fall risks. Using appropriate materials reduces these hazards.
  2. Comprehensive Tool Kits: Access to well-equipped toolboxes is crucial. Workers should have tools for repairs and routine maintenance, including electrical parts and plumbing components.
  3. Emergency Response Plans: Proper training to handle blowouts can save lives. Knowing how to respond in emergencies is critical for minimising property damage and ensuring personal safety.
  4. Advanced Detection Sensors: Modern technology plays a crucial role in safety. High-tech sensors that detect smoke, gas leaks, and fires can prevent catastrophic explosions if used correctly.
  5. Effective Safety Lighting and Signage: Visibility is vital in drilling operations. Poorly lit areas can obscure dangers, while clear signage alerts workers to hazardous behaviours and access limits.
  6. Routine Machinery Maintenance: Regular upkeep of equipment ensures functionality. Adhering to lockout/tagout procedures safeguards against accidents during maintenance.
  7. Ongoing Safety Training: Every crew member must undergo regular safety training. This includes evacuation procedures, equipment handling, and crisis management.
  8. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): The right gear is essential. Workers should wear heavy-duty boots, hard hats, gloves, and goggles at all times.
  9. Practical Housekeeping: Keeping work areas tidy can prevent falls and other accidents. Common sense plays a significant role in maintaining safety standards.

Prioritising Safety Saves Lives

The complexities of drilling and blasting operations demand an unwavering commitment to safety. As Chidamba notes, a proactive approach can make the difference between life and death in these high-stakes environments. By rigorously following safety protocols and investing in training and technology, mining operations can not only protect their workforce but also enhance overall operational efficiency.

In a field where the margin for error is razor-thin, every precaution counts.
