THE Zimbabwe School of Mines, a prestigious mining institution based in Bulawayo, is marking its 90th anniversary with a renewed commitment to churning out highly skilled and hands-on mining graduates for the SADC region and beyond.

School’s Legacy

Established in 1934, the Zimbabwe School of Mines has developed into a leading training institution, playing a pivotal role in the socioeconomic development of Zimbabwe and the mining industry across the region.

“Close to a century from its inception, the school still prides itself in producing competent mining practitioners extremely in demand in the SADC region and internationally,” said Edwin Gwaze, the school’s principal.

Hands-on Training

The school emphasizes practical, hands-on training to ensure students are well-prepared for successful mining careers.

Gwaze explained that the student mining career development ensures students have the assurance of a successful mining career path characterized by hands-on technical and professional mining expertise.

Gender Balance

While mining has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, the Zimbabwe School of Mines has made strides in promoting gender equity. The school has seen a significant increase in female student enrolment, rising from under 10% in 2008 to currently 34% of total enrolment.

Course Offerings

The school offers a range of industry-tailored courses, including:

  • Certificate courses
  • Diplomas
  • Higher National Diplomas
  • Postgraduate Diplomas

Disciplines covered include mining geology, gemology, surveying, engineering, metallurgy, foundry technology, iron, and steelmaking, mine safety, and mine management.

Keeping Pace with Industry Trends

According to Gwaze, the Zimbabwe School of Mines is driven to deliver excellent and appropriate lifelong training opportunities to all students, responding to the changing needs of Zimbabwe and the global mining industry.

“ZSM is driven to deliver excellent, appropriate lifelong training opportunities to all students, and respond to the needs of Zimbabwe and the global mining industry as the school continues to contribute immensely to the economic growth of the country,” he said.

Forging Ahead

As the mining industry continues to grow, the Zimbabwe School of Mines remains committed to producing skilled graduates equipped to meet the sector’s demands. With its hands-on approach, industry-relevant curricula, and focus on gender inclusivity, the institution aims to solidify its position as a leading provider of mining education in the region.
